Time to recap the first day of building.  We loaded up a couple vans and headed out to the country. The first challenge came when we had to divide 17 people into 3 teams - our sharp math skills finally solved the equation.  Two of the teams were in pretty close proximity to each other.  We met the owners and the locals - simply delightful people.

The gal in this picture is the owner of the home My team is working on.  Her husband was a soldier and died of malaria.  She has 4 children and earns $50 a month.  She said she could never have afforded to pay for a latrene.  She is very sweet and a very hard worker.  she worked with us the entire morning. Many of the locals helped out.  During our morning work, we were listening to a very big funeral - lots of music and chanting going on, next to our homes.  i figured if i died of a heart attack while digging the 5 ft hole the funeral arrangements would easily be taken care of :)

The local kids were fascinated to see a bunch of "old white people" working like we were in our 20's:

By the time we dug down the 5 feet we were in water, still needing to dig so we let Brent do the last part of the digging :). I was too vertically challenged to get the mud out of the hole :).

Things were going well, but we were a bit surprised by two "not so little" visitors!

We were able to get the entire latrene dug and set into place which gave us a real sense of accomplishment.  Here are a few shots from the day:

We left the site with the project well on its way:

So, more to follow :)
